As a knitter and handspinner of wool I began searching the roots of the Finnish wool. I met special people that work for the quality of wool and are proud of what they do. The people who are constantly trying to develop in their work. Sheep farmers who work for Finnish sheep breeds. Small entrepreneurs that process wool. Within years I have become part of this network too. My role from a single knitter and handspinner has expanded to creating products that enable you to enjoy this wool too.

Small things matter

It is often difficult to see the impact one person can make. With wool I have realized that small things matter. 60 years ago there were over 100 spinneries in Finland, now only a few. More and more of sheep wool is burn or thrown away because it has very little value. Finnish sheep breeds are often crossed with other breeds which affects the quality of the wool. One person’s deeds can seem pretty small in the big picture. But the quality of the wool does not increase by addicent. Every knitter and spinner of the wool enables the work for it. By knitting and spinning this wool you also enable the work of the people who want to feel proud of what they do and preserve the skills that have almost disappeared from Finland.

Special breed

Woolgrey specializes in kainuu grey finnsheep, the breed that almost disappeared from Finland but which has been saved recently. It has finer fur than the ordinary finnsheep. One kainuu grey sheep can have many shades of grey. This enables the production of many beautiful natural shades including almost white wool that is ideal for dyeing. Depending on the product I participate in selecting, washing, carding and dyeing the wool. That way I can stand behind these products and make sure that you will enjoy when to knitting and spinning them.
